Suzuki BMX Masters in Cologne


Cologne, July 23, 2006 440 international top riders from 30 nations started at the second Suzuki BMXMasters in Cologne and enthused around 12,000 spectators.

One of the absolute highlights was without any doubt the spine ramp Pro final on Saturday evening which was held on the Braun cruZer Spine ramp. The 17 competing riders gave the public what they wanted to see – BMX riding on the highest level. After several try’s Phil Aller pulled a fufanu on the backrail of the platform. Mark Webb took the first place with incredible runs and tricks such as double tailwhip tiretab or x-up flair and impressed the spectators as well as the judges. The crowd was loud and off the hook.

Just as sensational was also the vert final on sunday. Simon Tabron (UK), Peter Geys (BE) and Condor Mat Hoffman (USA) did what they do best. Alley Oop No Hand 540, Turndown 540 and Can-Can Lookback are and a 900 are only few Highlights of this competition. Although the world’s best rider Mat Hoffman took the second place after
Simon Tabron, Mat thrilled the crowd which acclaimed his runs – the spectators were totally amazed. Alessandro Barbero from Italy grabbed with a spectecular run with massive tricks such as 360 double tailwhip by blistering heat the first place in the street comp, followed by Chris Doyle from the USA. Hector Garcia from Mexico became 3rd.

The flatland tent was well visited the whole weekend. Mainly the final on Saturday attracted many spectators to see runs of 35 starters. With hard combos as hitchhiker to backpacker kickflip Justin Miller placed first. Martti Kuoppa and Adam Kun showed as well difficult linked moves, techical and clean runs.

There has been a positive response to the riding areas from many visitors, guests, riders and friends to this year’s dirt track which was shaped and moulded by Markus Hampl and Benny Paulsen: Five jumps, cornering mid-air, and good views from allround speaks for itself. Chris Doyle became King of Dirt with amazing jumps like one
foot x-up backflip or 360 turndown, followed by Alejandro Caro from Columbia and Kye Forte.

The best trick contests provided as usual much fun: Mark König from Germany won the adidas best trick Spine contest with a 270 Tailtap to icepick to toothpick tailwhip over the spine while Matthias Dandois from France won the Braun Best Combo contest in the flatland tent.

The official opening party of the Suzuki BMXMasters took place in the Purple Club on Friday evening. On the turntables were the Djs Future Rock, Rick Ski and Def Binski. On Saturday evenig the official Suzuki BMXMasters party was held in the Gloria club with the mighty Pow Pow Movement. The crowd partied til sunrise. Both parties were totally sold out.
