| a story by Alvaro Dal Farra |
Alvaro Dal Farra is a popular snowboarder in Italy and also
a really good Freestyle Motocross rider. Alvaro wrote an
exclusive story for specificX.com about his life beeing
a professional snowboard and Freestyle Motocross rider.
So read the story to know more about the nice guy who is
always in good mood!
Thinking about my past, I remember many stories told by
my parents, I’ve always been extroverted and particular
cause before learning to walk I used to go away on knees
shaking my family.
Starting snowboarding and FMX has not been immediate, also
because motorbike has always been feared by my father, in
fact I had my 1st motorized vehicle at 14: a Piaggio Ciao
bought exclusively for going to library and school. For
the snowboard went better. When I started to bore with ski
I managed to get a board as gift.

To better understand, in the past I did may sports,
also because my father believes in physical activities.
I passed through the most various sports of land and sea
during summer but the most important has been Rugby, even
if I alternate it gladly with skateboard. I had played 7
years this sport in my city team and some years with the
national team, also the Veneto all stars (a team made by
the best players of my region). Thanks to an injury during
rugby training I left the fields for some months and and
started to use my little board for the 1st time.
From the beginning my pretensions were high, still before
learning to turn I wanted to jump, but already I demonstrate
to be in.
I started snowboard at eighteen with my crew of writers
and skaters friends, and we were alternating those disciplines
and we had a lot of fun. Punctually at the weekends we has
made big partyes and then on the run to make kickers and
to jab on our ski resort (Nevegal) that is only 15 minutes
away from my city: Belluno.

In 99/00 the 1st snowpark build by me and some friends allowed
us to train everyday and grow our skills. The same year,
having enough skill, I wanted to start to compare with other
Italian riders that I never met and join the Italian jump
league… so I did. Every weekend I left my city alone
to have this contests, luckily from the beginning I went
good qualifying for finals and gaining some money that I
need for paying the other contests. From there the first
acquaintances and friends of the scene, obviously thinking
in my same way, and still now they’re my biggest friends.
Then the first sponsors arrived then increased, from the
first a skate & snow shop WAX in Vicenza that helped
me so much. Then Rossignol, Vans, Broke, Nideker, Level,
Smith...and then my actual sponsors that support me: Oakley,
Osiris, Bonfire, Salomon, Drake, Bakoda, Red bull, Iuter
crew. I used to ride near home and I leave only for competitions
, then slowly the level has grown and I started to ride
around for photos, video shootings, contests and invitational
events. I rode less near home and more away with my friends.

Then the first trip in USA in 2002 where we went for photos
and some contests. That year I joined the US Open in the
slopstyle contest scoring the 24th place, the top 20 went
to the final, a nice result for me cause I’ve beaten
really good guys. Latest years my presence in events has
lowered, more than for the broke of my foot at the end of
2002 that stopped me from snowboarding for 5 months, I preferred
to ride focusing on my image doing more photos and videos,
films with zombiesvideo, snowbox, something with methodmag
and doing shoothing with all the Italian snowboard magazines.

The FMX was born with the always big wish of cross
motorbikes, but just in 2000 thanks to my savings during
my studies and the bought of a Pick-up by my father, I bought
my 1st motocross Honda CR 125 (before I had only old and
smashed motos bought with 2 friends for 75€). Some
time before a friend of mine Daniel Bigolin, pro snowboarder
too, bought a Kawasaki 250. Even if he lives far from me,
our big friendship and the passion for snowboard and motocross,
made us to meet often to ride mx.
After few weeks of traditional race we look each other in
the eyes and said:”What the hell do we ride on track?
Why we don’t just jump?” From there everybody
started to curse us in every track. First of all cause we
cut the track to make just the final jump that usually is
the biggest, second cause we started to wear vests, shorts,
not good clothes for traditional mx, third cause we started
also to cut the motos to fit for FMX that seemed to be impossible
in Italy that time. Then we arrived to a track (my actual
training ground in Musano, TV) that were half way for both,
the owner become our friend and was one of the few guys
that doesn’t criticized us. He built a dirt ramp much
far from the track’s final jump where we could try
our tricks.

:-) |
In 2001 Daniel and me have been called to do a demo in a
mountain resort for august festivity. Unfortunately Daniel
trying the 1st jump went big and broke both ankles, femur
, wrist and an arm. From there he stopped, and to tell the
truth, my will passed too.
In may 2002 I met my actual friends and mates (Bianconcini,
Monti ,Toninello, Zironi and their team manager Felker)
that gave me the opportunity to jump on a iron ramp. When
I arrived at Miki’s track and I saw them jump I was
scared and thought I’ll never can jump, but then slowly
I made it. A week later I was in Rome for a contest with
them and names like Ronnie Renner, Kuchar, Andy Bell, etc.
Every time I hit the ramp I was scared.

Italy |
From there we jumped a lot together and we grew. We built
many ramps and created many spot in our zones. Now I do
contests and demos in Italy and outside.
In all those years, from 98 to October 2003, more than practicing
these sports I was studying at the Academy of Fine Arts
in Venice, where I developed and went on with my other big
passion: the art.
The most cool thing is that all my operas are linked to
this world of extremism, that I can complete with my sports
and art. |
